Class 7

Radioactive material is used in many applications, such as health care diagnosis and treatment, the production of plastics, measurement tools for engineers, smoke detectors, and mobile phones. Several million shipments of radioactive materials are transported every year.

The regulations for radioactive material are based on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (2012 Edition), Safety Standards Series No. TS-R-1 SSR-6, IAEA, Vienna (2012).

These regulations do not apply to the following:

  • Radioactive material implanted or incorporated into a person or live animal for diagnosis or treatment
  • A person who has been subject to accidental or deliberate intake of or contamination from radioactive material and is being transported for medical treatment
  • Radioactive material in consumer products that have received regulatory approval
  • Natural material and ores containing naturally occurring radionuclides
  • Non-radioactive solid objects with radioactive substances present on any surface in quantities not exceeding the limits for contamination
