Class 9 - Lithium Batteries Classification

Any cells and batteries that contain lithium in any form must be assigned to one of the following UN numbers in Class 9:

• UN 3090, Lithium metal batteries
• UN 3091, Lithium metal batteries contained in or packed with equipment
• UN 3480, Lithium ion batteries
• UN 3481, Lithium ion batteries contained in or packed with equipment

In order to be transported under the UN entries, they must meet the following provisions:

• Each cell or battery must meet the testing requirements described in the "UN Manual of Tests and Criteria," Part III, Subsection 38.3.
• Each cell and battery must incorporate a safety venting device or must be designed to prevent a violent rupture under normal conditions of transport.
• Each cell and battery must be equipped with an effective means of preventing external short circuits.
• Each battery containing cells or series of cells connected in parallel must be equipped with an effective means to prevent dangerous reverse current flow.
• Cells and batteries must be manufactured under a quality management program.
