DOTHMR Markings
When you offer a hazardous material for transportation, or transport a hazardous material, you must mark each package, freight container, and transport vehicle containing the hazardous material as required. The term marking refers to placing the required information on the outer package containing the hazardous materials. This includes a proper shipping name, identification number with the appropriate prefix, and specifications or UN markings, plus any other required information, instructions, and cautions.
For each package and overpack, the shipper is responsible for the following:
- Checking that relevant markings are in the correct location and meet the quality and specification requirements in the regulations.
- Removing or obliterating any irrelevant markings already on the package or overpack.
- Ensuring that each outer or single packaging used bears the proper specification marks.
- Applying any appropriate new mark in the correct location, and ensuring it is of durable quality and correct specification.
- Ensuring that all responsibilities for marking are completely fulfilled when the package or overpack is sent to the operator.
