Hazard Classes

There are nine classes of dangerous goods. The purpose of classification is to group dangerous goods together in such a way that the characteristics, properties, and hazards presented by all members of the class are similar. These classifications allow appropriate recommendations to be made for the packaging, handling, and shipping of a wide variety of dangerous goods. The nine classes are:

Class 1 - Explosives

Class 2 - Gases

Class 3 - Flammable Liquids

Class 4 - Flammable Solids

Class 5 - Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides

Class 6 - Toxic and Infectious Substances

Class 7 - Radioactive Materials

Class 8 - Corrosive Substances

Class 9 - Miscellaneous
