HAZMAT Shipping Labels - Class 7 Radioactive Materials

All packages and overpacks containing radioactive material must have a hazard label as specified in Subsection 4.2 of the IATA List of Dangerous Goods, along with any hazard labels for subsidiary risks. Fissile material must also have a Criticality Safety Index label.

There are four different hazard labels for radioactive material:

  • Category I - White
  • Category II - Yellow
  • Category III - Yellow
  • Criticality Safety Index

Each label has the trefoil symbol on the upper half of the label and the text and class number on the bottom half of the label. The maximum activity of the radioactive contents must be inscribed. For fissile material, the total mass can be used in place of the activity measurement. The Transport Index must be printed on all Category II and Category III Yellow labels. Unless otherwise noted, the minimum dimensions of the label must be 100 x 100 mm.

The Radioactive Material label and, if applicable, the Criticality Safety Index, subsidiary risk, and Cargo Aircraft Only labels, must be placed on two opposite sides of the package. Freight containers require labels on all four sides.

A Cargo Aircraft Only handling label is required for all Type B(M) packages and freight containers when being transported by air. Package Orientation handling labels are not required on packages containing liquid radioactive material. A Radioactive Material, Excepted handling label must be used on all excepted packages of radioactive material, unless it meets the requirements of Special Provision A130.
