IATA, Class 2 - Limited & Excepted Quantities

There are certain exceptions for medical oxygen. Gaseous oxygen and air cylinders that are required for medical use are permitted as baggage with operator approval. Each cylinder must not exceed 5 kg gross weight. The cylinders must also protect from inadvertent release of contents. The pilot-in-command must be notified of the number of oxygen and air cylinders onboard the aircraft. Any medical oxygen devices that use liquid oxygen are forbidden on passenger flights.

Small gas cylinders containing carbon dioxide or similar gases in Division 2.2 for the use of a self-inflating life jacket are permitted. However, there is a quantity limit of two. Similarly, one avalanche rescue backpack containing a cylinder of compressed gas in Division 2.2 is permitted per person. The backpack must be packed so that it cannot accidentally be activated.

Aerosols in Division 2.2 that are for sporting or home use are permitted as checked baggage, as long as the quantity does not exceed 2 kg or 2 L. The release valves on the dispensers must be protected by a cap or other suitable means.

The following Class 2 dangerous goods can be transported under the limited quantity provisions:

• UN 1950, aerosols, in Divisions 2.1 and 2.2
• UN 2037, gas cartridges and receptacles, in Divisions 2.1 and 2.2, without a subsidiary risk
• UN 3478 and UN 3479, fuel cell cartridges
