IATA, Class 3 - Packing Instructions

Any packages containing liquid dangerous goods should have a package orientation label with the words "THIS WAY UP." Single packagings with end closures must be loaded and stowed aboard an aircraft with such closure upward.

Specific packing instructions are listed in Section 4.2 of the IATA List of Dangerous Goods and can be found in Section 5.3. The packing instruction numbers are in the 300 range.

Many of the packing instructions do not allow for single packagings. Common inner packaging materials include glass, metal, and plastic. Paint, for example, must follow Packing Instructions 351, 353, or 355, depending on the amount being packaged. These instructions provide the acceptable types of inner and outer packagings and the amount of paint permitted in each type of inner packaging.

Class 3 dangerous goods must be segregated from Class 1 and Division 5.1 dangerous goods.
