IATA, Class 5 - Packing Instructions
In addition to general packing instructions described in Section 5, specific packing instructions are listed in Section 4.2 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and can be found in Section 5.5. The packing instruction numbers are in the 500 range.
For example, chemical oxygen generators that are used for protective breathing equipment (PBE) for use by air crew may be transported on passenger aircraft under Special Provision A144. They must be packed according to Packing Instruction 565 and are subject to the following conditions:
- The PBE must be serviceable and contained in the manufacturer's original, unopened inner packaging.
- It may only be consigned by, or on behalf of, the operator in the event it is deemed unserviceable or there is a need to replace such items.
- A maximum of 2 PBEs may be contained in a package.
- The statement "Air crew Protective Breathing Equipment (smoke hood) in accordance with Special Provision A144" must be on the Shipper's Declaration of Dangerous Goods and marked adjacent to the proper shipping name on the package.
