IATA Class 7 - Excepted Packages
Excepted packages may be used when there is a limited quantity of radioactive material in instruments, manufactured articles, or empty packages. In order to meet the requirements of an excepted package, the following conditions must be met:
- The radiation level on the external surface must not exceed 0.5 mrem/h.
- If the package contains fissile material, the smallest dimension must not be less than 10 cm.
- The non-fixed radioactive contamination on any external surface must not exceed the limits of 10.5.3.2 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
- The requirements of Subsection 10.2.2 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations must be met for all packages transported by air mail.
- There are no test requirements for excepted packages. The potential hazards for these packages are considered very low.
- If the excepted package of radioactive materials has any other dangerous characteristics, the other hazard takes precedence.
