IATA Class 8 - Packing Instructions

Specific packing instructions are listed in Section 4.2 of the IATA List of Dangerous Goods and can be found in Section 5.8. The packing instruction numbers are in the 800 range.

For example, mercury must be packaged in accordance with Packing Instruction 868. This instruction states that any metal packagings used must be corrosion-resistant or protected against corrosion. In addition, all packagings must meet Packing Group I performance standards. Inner packagings can be made of glass or plastic, and they must have leak-proof and puncture-resistant liners that completely surround the material to prevent it from leaking. Inner packagings must also be packed with sufficient cushioning to prevent breakage.
