IATA Class 9 - Magnetized Material Packing Instructions

Magnetized materials must be packed according to Packing Instruction 953. If the magnetized material has a magnetic field strength that can cause a compass deflection of more than 2 degrees at a distance of 2.1 m but not more than 2 degrees at a distance of 4.6 m, then the magnetized material is not subject to any other requirements of these regulations, except for the following provisions:

  • The shipper must make prior arrangement with the operator. If the words "magnetized material" and the number of packages are shown in the "Nature and Quantity of Goods" box on the air waybill or in the appropriate location on alternate transportation documentation, then a Shipper's Declaration of Dangerous Goods is not required.
  • The package must have the magnetized material handling label properly affixed.
  • The incident reporting requirements of Section 9.6 of the IATA regulations must be met.
  • Magnetized material with a magnetic field strength that can cause a compass deflection of more than 2 degrees at a distance of 4.6 m may only be transported with the prior approval of the appropriate State authorities.
