IATA Stowage & Segregation
IATA provisions in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) (including the IATA List of Dangerous Goods) are broken down by class, a brief overview of some materials follows.
Explosives and the Thirteen Compatibility Groups
- Explosives in Compatibility Group 1.4B must not be stowed with any other compatibility group, except for 1.4S.
- If Division 1.4B explosives are loaded onto an aircraft with any explosives other than Division 1.4S, then the Division 1.4B explosives must be loaded into a separate unit load device, and the unit load device must be a minimum of 2 m from any other cargo.
- If a unit load device is not used, the Division 1.4B explosives must be loaded into a different, non-adjacent loading position and separated from other cargo by at least 2 m.
Most explosives and pyrophoric liquids are forbidden from air transport. The appropriate national authority may exclude an article or substance from Class 1 through test results.
Certain Class 1 dangerous goods are allowed for transport in limited quantities in checked baggage. Cartridges for small arms weapons may be transported as checked baggage with operator approval if it is securely packaged, meets the requirements for Division 1.4S (UN 0012 and UN 0014 only), and does not exceed 5 kg (11 lb) gross weight per person. Allowances for more than one person cannot be combined into one or more packages.
