IMDG Code: Consigning Operations for Cargo Transport Units
The next chapter in Part 7 of the IMDG Code is called "Consigning Operations Concerning the Packing and Use of Cargo Transport Units and Related Provisions" It supplies provisions applicable to those responsible for consignment operations in the dangerous goods supply chain. It states that containers carrying packages with dangerous goods must be strong enough to withstand the activity normally encountered during transport without losing their contents.
Numerous provisions are given for the packing of cargo transport units (CTUs). Prior to loading, both the CTU and packages containing dangerous goods must be inspected. The CTU must be appropriate for carrying the materials in question and must be in good repair. The packages of dangerous goods must not be damaged, leaking, or sifting. If either condition is not met, the CTU cannot be loaded until the situation has been fully corrected. Several rules regarding the packing, segregating, stacking, and securing of packages in the CTU must be observed. These are found under 7.3.3 and 7.3.4.
