IMDG Code: Provisions for Shipborne Barge Cargo
Certain dry dangerous goods can be transported in bulk on shipborne barges; these are marked with the bulk code BK2 in column 13 of the Dangerous Goods List. These bulk-transported goods must be evenly distributed, properly trimmed, and secured. Dangerous goods may be carried in flexible bulk containers, but caution must be taken to avoid shifting of the cargo, and when stacked, these containers cannot be stacked more than three high. Important provisions for the stowage of shipborne barges are found under 7.7.4 and segregation requirements are listed under 7.7.5. In general, barges loaded with dangerous goods must be stowed and segregated in a manner similar to containers and packages.
