IMDG Code, Special Packing Provisions for Infectious Substances & Radioactive Material

Two more sections of special packing provisions are found at 4.1.8 and 4.1.9 of the IMDG Code. The first of these (4.1.8) refers to the transport of infectious substances of Category A, which, as you may recall, are substances that are transported in a form that, should exposure occur, could cause permanent disability, or life-threatening or fatal disease in healthy humans and animals. Various regulations are set out to ensure that exposures will not occur, including rules regarding the type of packagings for liquids, labeling requirements, and handling procedures for empty packaging. Similar provisions are given under Section 4.1.9 concerning the packaging of radioactive material.
