IMDG Code: Stowage & Segregation on Containerships

The next chapters in Part 7 provide stowage and segregation recommendations for specific ship types. (Note that for the first two chapters covering containerships and roll-on/roll-off ships, the reader is referred for specific illustrations to IMO MSC.1/Circ. 1440. This document is available online in PDF form.)

Chapter 7.4 - Stowage and Segregation on Containerships provides specific guidelines for the stowage of dangerous goods on ships that are hatch-less or fitted with partially weather-tight hatchway covers. Special provisions apply for containers carrying flammable gases or highly flammable liquids.

Two tables summarizing segregation requirements are provided under 7.4.3. The first table gives vertical and horizontal restrictions for containers on board containerships with closed cargo holds. The second delivers similar information regarding containers on board hatch-less containerships. In both cases, the tables use the segregation terms previously introduced under 7.2.2.2.; these terms, which are part of the segregation codes scheme (for example, SG35 - Stow separated from acids) are now given practical meaning in the context of specific ship types.
