IMDG Code: Stowage & Segregation on Ro-Ro Ships
The next chapter in Part 7, 7.5 - Stowage and Segregation on Ro-Ro Ships, addresses the particular stowage and segregation requirements for roll-on/roll-off or "ro-ro" ships. These vessels have one or more decks, either closed or open, that are not normally subdivided in any way. Ro-ro ships carry packaged and bulk goods sometimes in or on rail or road cars, semi-trailers, containers, or similar. Cargo on ro-ro ships is most often loaded and unloaded in a horizontal position. In some cases, these ships may also ferry passengers, and one important provision is that cargo space must be securely closed during voyages. Prominent signage must prohibit the entrance of unauthorized persons into cargo areas. Passenger spaces must also be protected from the entrance of toxic vapors and liquids, and a number of provisions are set out to protect against fire, toxic gases, and other hazards. Section 7.5.3.2 provides a table of segregation of cargo transport units on board ro-ro ships.
