IMDG Code Transport Documents
In the IMDG Code, the provisions for proper documentation of dangerous goods shipments are addressed in Part 5. Consignors who offer dangerous goods for transport must give the carrier the required information applicable to the goods, delivered on paper or digitally. The Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form, found under Section 5.4.5, is an example of an acceptable dangerous goods transport document. This form, and all other dangerous goods transport documents, must display the following information:
- Consignor, consignee, and date
- Dangerous goods description, including, in this order: the UN number, proper shipping name, primary hazard class, subsidiary hazard class (where assigned), packing group (where assigned)
- Information to supplement the proper shipping name
Other information is required in addition to the dangerous goods description, including total quantity of dangerous goods, limited quantity exceptions, salvage packaging information, and indications that the package contains substances requiring temperature control for stability, self-reactive substances, organic peroxides, infectious substances, radioactive material, aerosols, explosives, or viscous substances. Several other special situation instructions are noted in this section of the document as well.
