Types of Tests

Drop test: A test sample must be able to withstand and protect the contents of the packaging against collisions. A drop test is conducted by allowing the packaging to freefall onto corners, edges, and flat surfaces from a drop height specified in Subsection 6.3.3. Table 6.3.A of the IATA DGR provides the number of test samples and the drop orientation for each type of packaging.

Leak-proof test: A leak-proof test must be performed on all types of packagings that are intended to contain liquids. This test is not required for inner packagings of combination packagings. There must be three test samples per design, and there can be no leakage. The packagings, including the closures, must be held under water for five minutes while internal air pressure is applied.
