Steel or aluminum jerricans are divided into four categories:
- 3A1 - Steel jerrican with non-removable head
- 3A2 - Steel jerrican with removable head
- 3B1 - Aluminum jerrican with non-removable head
- 3B2 - Aluminum jerrican with removable head
The material must be constructed of steel sheet, at least 99% pure aluminum, or an aluminum base alloy.
Plastic drums and jerricans are divided into four categories:
- 1H1 - Plastic drum with non-removable head
- 1H2 - Plastic drum with removable head
- 3H1 - Plastic jerrican with non-removable head
- 3H2 - Plastic jerrican with removable head
The material must be manufactured from suitable plastic and be of adequate strength. It must also be resistant to aging and degradation caused either by the substance contained or by ultra-violet radiation. Closures for removable heads must be designed to remain secure and leakproof under normal conditions of transport.
The maximum capacity of the jerrican is 60 L, and the maximum net weight is 120 kg. The maximum capacity of the drum is 450 L, and the maximum net weight is 400 kg.
