UN Standard Packaging Marking

Every UN standard packaging must be marked with the appropriate UN certification mark, which contains the ID code letters and numbers, preceded by the UN symbol. The UN standard packaging marking must consist of the following:

  1. The United Nations packaging symbol
  2. The code number designating the types of packaging (1D is the code for a plywood drum)
  3. The letter X, Y, or Z designating that the design type for the associated packing group has been successfully tested
    1. X indicates that the package performs to the level of PG I and may also be used for PG II and III
    2. Y indicates that the package performs to the level of PG II and may also be used for PG III
    3. Z indicates that the package performs to the level of PG III and may not be used for any other packing group
  4. A number indicating the relative density (for liquids) or the maximum gross weight (for solids and inner packagings)
  5. A number indicating the hydraulic test pressure, shown in kPa, for liquids, or the letter "S" for solids and inner packagings
  6. The last two digits of the year in which the packaging was manufactured
  7. International Vehicle Registration Code (VRI), indicating the state or country authorizing the mark
  8. Manufacturer's identifying mark
