Canada Road & Rail Transport - Carrier Responsibilities

Carriers of dangerous goods in Canada are responsible for the safety of the dangerous goods while they are in transit. The carrier must do the following:

  • Confirm that the shipper has provided a complete shipping document that matches the goods in the shipment
  • Match documentation to the safety labels or marks displayed on shipment containers
  • Check packaging and containment prior to transport to confirm that they are in good condition
  • Look over the transport vehicle to confirm that it is in good condition
  • Ensure that placards are properly displayed on the vehicle throughout the transport, if needed
  • Keep the shipping document or documents in a secure location in the cab of the vehicle
  • Report any dangerous situations that occur during transport
  • Provide a copy of the shipping document to the receiver of the shipment
