Canada Road & Rail Transport - Class 1 Safety Marks

Rules related to the safety marks for Class 1 dangerous goods follow those previously described in Section 6, Dangerous Goods Safety Marks, with a few exceptions. These first of these exceptions can be stated as follows:

  • A placard is not required to be displayed for explosives included in Class 1.4 when they are transported in a quantity less than or equal to 1,000 kilograms of net explosives, or for Class 1.4S loads of any quantity.

Contrary to the rule just stated, a placard must be displayed for UN0301, AMMUNITION, TEAR-PRODUCING.

The second exception to the general safety mark requirements applies to explosives that are included in more than one division and are transported in a large means of containment. In this case, only the placard for the explosives with the lowest division number is required to be displayed.

There are two situations that are exceptions to this rule, as follows:

  • When Class 1.2 and Class 1.5 explosives are transported together, the placard for Class 1.1 must be displayed.
  • When Class 1.4 and Class 1.5 explosives are transported together, the placard for Class 1.5 must be displayed.
