Canada Road & Rail Transport - Class 1
Substances are included in Class 1, Explosives, if they have either of the following characteristics:
- Capable, by chemical reaction, of producing gas at a temperature, pressure, and speed that would damage the surroundings
- Designed to produce an explosive or pyrotechnic effect by heat, light, sound, gas, smoke, or a combination of those means without requiring a spark, but instead through self-sustaining chemical reactions
Common examples of Class 1 dangerous goods are ammunitions, display fireworks, and air bag inflators.
Explosive reactions displayed by this group of dangerous goods may include mass explosion, projectile force, and minor or major blasts with or without fire. These different characteristics serve as the basis for subdivisions within Class 1.
