Canada Road & Rail Transport - Class 5

Substances are included in Class 5 if they are oxidizing substances or organic peroxides and meet the criteria for inclusion in one of the divisions of Class 5. Common Class 5 substances are hydrogen peroxide, sodium nitrite, and ammonium nitrate fertilizers.

Class 5 has two divisions.

Class 5.1, Oxidizing Substances, consists of substances that yield oxygen, thereby causing or contributing to the combustion of other material.

Class 5.2, Organic Peroxides, consists of substances that have one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Are thermally unstable organic compounds that contain oxygen in the bivalent "-O-O-" structure
  • Are liable to undergo exothermic self-accelerating decomposition
  • Are liable to explosive decomposition
  • Burn rapidly
  • Are sensitive to impact or friction
  • React dangerously with other substances
  • Cause damage to the eyes
  • Are in the list of currently assigned organic peroxides in Section 2.5.3.2.4 of Chapter 2.5 of the UN Recommendations
