Canada Road & Rail Transport - Class 9 Special Containment

A set of specific containment rules pertaining to dangerous goods in a number of classes is found in Part 5 of the TDG Regulations. These can be summarized as follows:

  • A person must not handle, offer for transport, or transport dangerous goods included in Class 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, or 9 in a small means of containment. The exception to this rule is if it is a UN standardized means of containment that is selected and used in accordance with certain standards listed in Part 5, Section 5.12, of the TDG Regulations.
  • A person must not reuse a steel or plastic drum with a capacity greater than or equal to 150 liters to handle, offer for transport, or transport dangerous goods that are liquid and are included in Class 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, or 9. The exception to this rule is if reconditioning, remanufacturing, and repair comply with certain requirements listed in Part 5, Section 5.12, of the TDG Regulations.
  • A person must not handle, offer for transport, or transport dangerous goods included in Class 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, or 9 in a large means of containment unless it is manufactured, selected, and used in accordance with certain requirements listed in Part 5, Section 5.14, of the TDG Regulations.
