Canada Road & Rail Transport - Proof of Classification
A consignor who allows a carrier to take possession of dangerous goods for transport or who imports them into Canada, must make a proof of classification available to the Minister of Transport on reasonable notice. The consignor is responsible for this proof of classification for a period of five years, which begins on the date listed on the shipping document.
A proof of classification is a test report, a lab report, or a document that explains how dangerous goods were classified. It may also be a safety data sheet, if the sheet is accompanied by an explanation that describes how the dangerous goods were classified.
A proof of classification must list the following information:
- The date on which the dangerous goods were classified
- The technical name of the dangerous goods (if applicable)
- The classification of the dangerous goods
- The classification method used (if applicable)
