Canada Road & Rail Transport - Means of Containment
Dangerous goods may not be handled, offered for transport, or transported in Canada if the packaging or container they are placed in does not meet the "means of containment" standards set out in the TDG Regulations, Part 5.
Dangerous goods may be transported in a variety of container types. In some cases, the good is transported directly in a specified container without additional packaging, but some goods must be placed in several different packagings before they are considered to be properly packaged. The means of containment for a given dangerous good is designed to ensure that there will be no accidental release of the good. Depending upon the capacity of the container, these may be referred to as follows:
- Small means of containment - Containers with a capacity of up to 450 litres (for example, bags, boxes, and drums)
- Large means of containment - Containers with a capacity greater than 450 litres (for example, tank cars, portable tanks, and intermediate bulk containers)
