Canada Road & Rail Transport - Containment Standard

Part 5 of the TDG Regulations requires that anyone handling, transporting, or offering dangerous goods for transport must use containers that meet specific standards. These standards have been developed by expert committees from industry, government, and environmental groups, and are published by such organizations as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB). When these standards are referred to in the TDG Regulations, a short-form reference is used. To learn more about the referenced item, refer to the table found in Part 1, Section 1.3.1, of the TDG Regulations. There, the full title of the standard is given. This can be used to locate the standard in the documentation provided by the standard board involved.

For example, while using the TDG Regulations, you see the reference "CSA B340." Turning to the table found under Section 1.3.1, you learn that this refers to the CSA Standard B340-08, "Selection and use of cylinders, spheres, tubes, and other containers for the transportation of dangerous goods, Class 2," March 2008, published by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). To learn more, you must navigate to the CSA website, or consult a purchased hard copy of the standards.

It is important to note that the TDG Regulations may describe exceptions or additions to a specified standard. In these cases, the TDG rules and regulations supersede all other standards.
