Canada Road & Rail Transport - Receiver or Consignor Responsibilities

Receivers of dangerous goods in Canada, also referred to as consignors, are responsible for the safe unloading of the shipment. In addition, the receiver must do the following:

  • Retain one copy of the shipping document for at least two years
  • Report any dangerous situations that occur while the goods are under the receiver's control
  • Ensure that all safety labels or marks are removed from containment packaging once the packaging has been cleaned and purged of the dangerous good
  • Notify the shipper if any part of the shipment is not in compliance with the TDG Regulations

Once the goods have been received, all subsequent handling must meet Canada's Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS1) requirements. The WHMIS1 is a comprehensive information resource that provides information on the safe handling of hazardous materials in the workplace.
