Canada Road & Rail Transport - Application of the Regulations
The TDG Regulations apply to all stages of the transportation of dangerous goods within Canada. To ensure compliance, the regulations are backed by a system of inspection and enforcement. While various federal, provincial, and territorial governments within Canada have enacted their own legislation related to the transport of dangerous goods, each of these governments have adopted the TDG Regulations as part of this legislation.
The TDG Regulations concern the transport of any good that possesses certain qualities that can endanger life, health, property, and the environment. The products singled out as dangerous goods under the TDG Regulations are those that are likely, based on their composition, to be dangerous at all times.
Several different transportation-related activities are encompassed by the TDG Regulations. The term "handling" is often used in the rules, and this refers to loading or unloading, packing or unpacking, and storage. In this way, the TDG Regulations do not simply apply to the movement of dangerous goods by road, rail, boat, or air, but instead focus on ensuring safety during the entire process of transferring a dangerous good from one point to another.
