Canada Road & Rail Transport - Using the Regulations
To best understand how to use the various parts of the TDG Regulations, imagine that you have been assigned the task of determining the applicable rules for shipping a quantity of a dangerous good used in pharmaceuticals. You are told that the chemical's UN number is UN2907. With that information, you use Part 18, Schedule 1 of the TDG Regulations to learn more about the shipping regulations for the product.
In the table shown there, you locate UN2907 in column 1, and read across the row to learn more about the rules that apply specifically to this item. You learn that the shipping name for this product is "Isosorbide Dinitrate Mixture." You note that it is a Class 4.1 dangerous good, a flammable solid. You can now turn to Part 2, Classification, to learn more about the regulations related to this product's class and division.
Continuing to read across the table, you note that this dangerous good is given packing group II status, and is subject to special provision number 38. To read the details of this special provision, you check Schedule 2 of the TDG Regulations. There, you learn that the product cannot touch the walls of the container.
Reading further across the row, you determine what constitutes a "limited" or "excepted" quantity for the product. You also learn its ERAP index, and note that this product is forbidden from transport by passenger carrying vessels, but is allowed in small quantities in road and railway vehicles. Most of these entries refer you to other parts of the regulations where you can learn about the requirements in greater detail.
