Canada Road & Rail Transport - Roles & Responsibilities

The transport of dangerous goods by road or rail is likely to involve a number of different steps and phases. At each step, an individual or individuals within an organization play an important role in ensuring that the TDG Regulations are met. These roles include the shipper, carrier, and receiver of the dangerous good shipment.

In some instances within these roles, employees may act to carry out the mandates of their employers. The roles of employer and employee are also important.

If there is an accidental release of a dangerous good at any point during the transport process, regardless of an individual's role, the following actions must be taken:

  • Activate all reasonable emergency responses in order to protect the public
  • Report the accident to the appropriate authorities, as required by the TDG Regulations
