Canada Road & Rail Transport - Safety Marks
Dangerous goods containers and transport methods must be clearly marked with information about their contents. Safety marks may include labels, placards, orange panels, signs, marine pollutant marks, numbers, letters, abbreviations, and words. All of these safety marks are used to identify dangerous goods and to show the nature of the danger they pose. In this way, the marks ensure that the people involved in handling and transport are aware that a marked shipment includes a dangerous good. Safety marks also aid in quick identification of dangerous goods in an emergency. Because of the role these marks play in proper handling and emergency responses, the correct safety marks for the dangerous good being transported must be used at all times.
Part 4 of the TDG Regulations provides specific information on the safety marks required for each class and division of dangerous goods. These will be discussed in an upcoming section of this course.
