Employer Responsibilities - Training
It is up to management to train employees and collect the information needed to successfully run a Medical Surveillance Program. OSHA suggests that management should complete the following tasks or responsibilities related to training employees for a Medical Surveillance Program:
- Encourage all prospective employees to provide a "complete and detailed occupational and medical history"
- Assure all potential and current employees that their medical records will remain confidential
- Require workers to report any suspected exposures, regardless of degree of exposure and potential risk or harm
- Require workers to alert a physician if they experience "any unusual physical or psychological conditions"
- Ensure that all workers understand that "vague disturbances or apparently minor complaints (such as skin irritation or headaches) may be important"
Remember that no instance, injury, or illness is too small to report when employees are working under such dangerous and strenuous conditions!
