Monitoring and Sampling

By now, you are well aware that sites change over time: initial site characterization will not reflect the potential future dangers of a site. As the conditions change, so do the risks; this is why it is vital to have ongoing monitoring and sampling as a part of the worksite safe practices.

OSHA suggests that ongoing monitoring includes "stationary sampling equipment, personnel monitoring devices, and periodic area monitoring with direct-reading instruments." This data, combined with offsite and onsite surveys, can help to develop a plan that details the procedures to be used for monitoring ambient conditions during cleanup operations.

There is a specific emphasis in this unit on respirators, but it is important to note that OSHA also suggests monitoring "routes of exposure other than inhalation." An example is skin swipe tests, which "may be used to determine the effectiveness of personal protective clothing." Employers should take it upon themselves to order other forms of testing and sampling to help monitor the site as it changes and to ensure employee safety.
