Pre-employment Screening - Determination of Fitness, Ability to Work While Wearing PPE
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) respirator standard (29 CFR Part 1910.134) states that no employee should be assigned to a task that requires the use of a respirator unless it has been determined that the person is physically able to perform under such conditions. Therefore, after the first two stages of Pre-employment Screening (Review of Occupational and Medical History and Physical Examination), employers must then conduct the third stage of the medical history review: Ability to Work While Wearing Protective Equipment.
In the Ability to Work While Wearing Protective Equipment portion of Pre-employment Screening, employers and physicians take the information collected in stages one and two and do the following:
- Disqualify all individuals clearly unable to perform job duties (for example, employees suffering from severe lung disease, heart disease, back problems, or other orthopedic problems). This disqualification is based on the medical history and physical exam.
- Note all limitations to each worker's ability to use protective equipment (for example, an employee who wears glasses and cannot wear contacts cannot use a full facepiece respirator)
- Provide additional testing when needed (such as pulmonary function testing or an electrocardiogram) to determine the ability to wear protective equipment
- Make a written assessment of the worker's capacity to perform while wearing a respirator (if wearing a respirator is a job requirement)
