Pre-employment Screening
The first component of a Medical Surveillance Program is pre-employment screening. This is the testing that takes place before an employee begins work on the site.
Pre-employment screening has two major purposes:
- Determination of Fitness for Duty (to determine if an individual has the required level of fitness for his or her duties, including the ability to work while wearing protective equipment). This includes a review of occupational and medical history, a physical exam, and an exam related to PPE.
- Baseline Data for Future Exposures (to provide a "baseline data for comparison with future medical data"). This will allow for diligent record-keeping, which could help employers identify site hazards in the future.
