Types of Medical Surveillance

There is not one type of medical surveillance. Medical surveillance can be based on any of the following:

• Screening prior to an employee beginning employment
• A single case or event
• Screening results from the group of employees being evaluated to look for abnormal trends in health status
• Results from a single employee over time
• Results from a review of group's results

However, the most important way that medical surveillance takes place is through the written Safety and Health Program. You will now learn about how medical surveillance takes place through this program.
