Bulking
Bulking is the process of combining (bulking) some wastes together and placing them in bulk containers (like tanks or vacuum trucks) in order to make transportation much easier and efficient. It occurs in the final staging area.
OSHA recommends the following procedures for bulking:
- Inspect each tank trailer. To prevent a reaction with an incompatible chemical, remove any residual materials from the trailer before transferring any bulked materials.
- For hazardous liquids, use pumps. Select those with a splash shield and those that are rated well by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). (See 70 Articles 500-503 and NFPA 497M.)
- Check to be sure that the pump hoses, casings, fittings, and gaskets are all compatible with the material being pumped.
- Inspect hose lines to see if all lines, fittings, and valves are intact. Look for damage and potential weak spots.
- Be careful when using hoses. They can contain residual material, which might splash or spill on employees when in use.
- Store flammable liquids in approved containers.
Remember that bulking should be performed only after thorough characterization of waste, and only by trained and experienced personnel.
