Hazard Communication Program, Step 1
Step 1: Learn the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), 29 CFR 1910.1200(g), and identify responsible staff. In this step, OSHA encourages employers to take the following actions:
- Obtain a copy of the HCS. It is easily accessed on the OSHA website. Reference sections (e) through (h), which are about the written Hazard Communication Program, labels and other forms of warning, Safety Data Sheets, and employee information and training.
- Read the HCS. Employers cannot create a comprehensive hazard communication if they do not fully understand the process of chemical identification and handling!
- Determine the person who will be responsible for implementation of the HCS. This person is responsible for overall coordination, compliance, and allocation of duties.
- Identify staff responsible for specific tasks or activities (such as training).
