Hazard Communication Program, Step 3

Step 3: Ensure containers are labeled. This includes requirements for both the employer and the manufacturer or importer. The employer must ensure that the containers have labels (and that employees have access to information about these labels); the manufacturer or importer must be sure to include these labels (which must be accurate).

Shipped containers must include the following information, which you will review in a few slides:

  • A product identifier
  • A signal word
  • Pictograms
  • Hazard statements
  • Precautionary statements
  • The name, address, and phone number of the responsible party

Employers must keep labels on shipped containers unless they replace these shipped labels with alternatives provided by third parties. For example, labels from the National Fire Protection Association or Hazardous Materials Identification System are acceptable.

Employers must also be sure to label workplace containers where required. This label must include the product identifier and general information concerning the hazards of the chemical.
