Step 5: Inform and train employees. This is detailed in paragraph (h) of the HCS.

Employers must train employees before their initial assignments. Training must do the following:

• Be in a manner and language that employees understand.
• Occur before the initial assignment.
• Occur again when new hazards are introduced into the work area.
• Inform employees about the hazardous chemicals in their work area.
• Teach employees about appropriate protective measures.

At the end of training, employers must make sure that their workers do or know the following:

• Understand they are exposed to hazardous chemicals.
• Know that labels and SDSs can provide them with information on the hazards of a chemical.
• Know that they may consult SDSs when needed.
• Have a general understanding of what information is provided on labels and SDSs.
• Know how to access SDSs.
• Be aware of the protective measures available in their workplace.
• Know how to use or implement these protective measures.
• Know who they should contact if an issue arises.
• Know where and how to obtain additional information.
