Label Wording
OSHA requires that the following specific information be included on labels:
- Name, address, and telephone number of the manufacturer or importer.
- Product identifier (the way in which the hazardous chemical is identified). This could include the chemical name, code number, or batch number.
- Signal words (indicates how dangerous the chemical is). This could be "Danger" (for more severe hazards) or "Warning" (for less severe hazards).
- Hazard statements (a hazard statement that describes the chemical's specific hazards). For example, "Causes damage to kidneys through prolonged or repeated exposure when absorbed through the skin."
- Precautionary statements (describe the actions one should take after exposure to a hazardous chemical). An example is "Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames and store in a cool, well-ventilated place." There are four types of precautionary statements:
- Prevention
- Response
- Storage
- Disposal
- Pictograms (diagrams indicating dangers).
- Supplemental information (such as directions for use, the expiration date, the date the container was filled, or additional instructions or information that the manufacturer, importer, or distributor finds helpful).
