Machinery

Large machines pose many of the same hazards as power tools. Additionally, machinery poses additional hazards to be aware of, including the following:

  • Pinch points: Where two points of the machinery move together, one of which travels in a circle.
  • Wrap points: An exposed component of the machine rotates.
  • Shear points: Where two pieces of a machine come together to cut or shear a soft material.
  • Crush points: Two pieces of machinery come together, or one piece is designed to move towards a stationary piece.
  • Pull-in points: Any piece of machinery that is designed to have pieces pulled in for processing.
  • Thrown objects: Any object that can be tossed or thrown because of the moving parts of the machine.

It is important to keep the following things in mind when working with a power tool and around machinery:

  • Do not wear loose fitting clothing or jewelry.
  • Never carry a tool by the power cord.
  • Use the tool meant specifically for the job.
  • Use the correct components (for example a saw blade or bit) for the task.
  • Do not remove any machinery guards.
  • Do not reach over any power tool in operation.
  • Always disconnect from a power source when performing maintenance such as clearing a blockage or changing an accessory.
  • Keep hair pulled back.
  • Inspect and maintain power tools as recommended by the manufacturer.
