Pictograms 1 - 4
OSHA's first four pictograms are as follows:
- Flame
- Flame over Circle
- Exclamation Mark
- Exploding Bomb
Each indicates a different class of chemicals.
The Flame pictogram identifies the following chemical classes: flammables, pyrophorics, self-heating, flammable gas emitting, self-reactives, and organic peroxides.
The Flame over Circle pictogram identifies chemicals classified as oxidizers. Oxidizers can either initiate the burning of a fuel or accelerate its burning. Some oxidizers have such a high potential of causing fire that they are not classified as oxidizers but rather as explosives.
The Exclamation Mark pictogram identifies the following classes of chemicals: irritants (skin and eye), skin sensitizers, acute toxicity (the toxic effects resulting from a single dose or short exposure to a substance), narcotic effects, respiratory tract irritant, and hazardous to the ozone layer.
