Pictograms
Illustrations are an effective way to convey important information about chemical dangers. For this reason, OSHA requires labels to have pictograms. Pictograms are graphic symbols that communicate specific information about the hazards of a chemical. The pictograms approved by OSHA are used worldwide.
The required pictogram for a hazardous chemical is a red square frame, set at a point, with a black hazard symbol on a white background (pictured). The pictogram must be wide enough to be clearly visible.
OSHA provides eight pictograms to illustrate the different hazard classes. You will review all 8 briefly in the following slides.
Remember that OSHA's Guidance for Hazard Determination for Compliance with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) is an excellent resource for pictogram information.
