PPE - Emergency Situations
In addition to covering PPE for normal workplace activities, this course covered PPE selection and requirements for emergency situations. This includes response to natural disasters and chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) situations.
When choosing PPE for emergency response workers, employers should do the following:
- Ensure that the required PPE related to the worker's specific job tasks and working conditions is on hand.
- Select PPE based on a thorough hazard assessment at the worksite.
- Consider PPE material durability in relation to the worker's tasks.
- Evaluate PPE in relation to heat stress.
- Consider the length of time a worker is able to wear a specific combination of equipment.
- Evaluate the physical condition of the worker in relation to PPE use and responsibilities.
- Consider the demands of the specific work activity while wearing PPE.
- Explore any other effects on worker mobility or dexterity.
- Consider if layers of PPE might be needed for sufficient protection.
