Pre-Employment Screening
The first component of a Medical Surveillance Program is pre-employment screening. This is the testing that takes place before an employee begins work on the site.
Pre-employment screening has two major purposes:
- Determination of fitness for duty
- A review of occupational and medical history
- Physical examination
- A test of one's ability to work while wearing protective equipment.
- 29 CFR Part 1910.134 states that no employee should be assigned to a task that requires the use of a respirator unless it has been determined that the person is physically able to perform under such conditions.
- Collection of baseline data for future exposures
- This screening exists to establish a level ("baseline") of data that can later "determine if exposures have adversely affected the worker."
