Prior to Moving Drums

Employers and employees must take many steps before moving drums. 29 CFR 1910.120(j)(1)(vi) states that "prior to movement of drums or containers, all employees exposed to the transfer operation shall be warned of the potential hazards associated with the contents of the drums or containers."

Additionally, the employer must be sure of the following:

• Drums or containers must meet the requirements for moving, as outlined below:
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(j), titled "Handing Drums and Containers."
  • EPA 40 CFR 264-265 and 300
  • DOT 49 CFR 171-178
• The drums and containers are properly inspected and labeled.
